Devlog 8: Production sprint week 6


Final week of production WOOT WOOT!

Artist

Blocks

We made extra the textures for the Standard, Metal, Death, Climb and Comfort block to fit the winter biome style, we wanted to do this for sa while to give each biome more of an authentic feel and really push their own chararistics. 


UI

Particles

We've added a bunch of cool effects to our game The big one's you'll notice immediately are the transitional clouds that spawn when we switch out our biomes, and the snow that falls down around the player.


Aside from these we've also added: a fire particles that's being used on our main menu and some islands in the background, some dirt particles that get added at the bottom of our standard blocks and a healing particle that will surround the player when they interact with the comfort block.


Sound Effects

we added two small sound effects to our game, a sound for when the player gets eaten by the shark, and a sound effect for when blocks fall on each other.

Menus

Start Menu: Get started with a nice cozy camp fire and some teddies around you! Have fun during your journey!


For the menus we finalized the pause menu, with a functional volume setter now. You also have the ability to turn on the jump helper widget.



Additionally, a leaderboard is now visualized. You can compare your rankings now with other players!



Coders

Cloud obstruction effect

Changing biome's now happens with an effect in the background, no longer will the player see all the islands in the background suddenly change.

Start menu, pause menu, settings menu controller support

Unreal sure isn't very helpful when it comes to setting up controller support for the UI. It has made it into the game though! The basic foundation has been laid down which makes it easier to add support to different kinds of UI's.

Improved block spawning

There were lots of bugs with the old block spawning, Code has been rewritten and bugs have been fleshed out, it's now also possible to define the chance of all the blocks that can spawn.

Scalable difficulty

The game's difficulty can be distributed over different stages, once the player reaches the required height of a given stage, that difficulty will become applied. Block spawn distance, blocktypes, blocks in "ensured" path and shark speed can all be configured.

Climbing block

A new block has been implemented, the player can keep pressing the jump key when he/she is touching the ladder to climb up.

Game over widget

When you die in the game you will now get a game over widget. Here you will be able to save your trip into the clouds. 

Height meter

From now on you can see how high you can climb, which will immerse you more in the feeling of going up!
